    Weather Updates:

    • We are in peak hurricane season with disturbances being monitored in the Atlantic; however, models are showing most developing storms will track north, away from the U.S. Coast, with no impending impacts at this time.

     

    ‌Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) Updates:

    • Diesel prices are continuing to climb, increasing in all ten regions, up $.093 nationally to $4.633, but still down $0.331 from one year ago. The largest increase of $.222 was in California to $6.192, bringing the region back over $6.00 for the first time since the week of November 28, 2022.
    • The Southeastern market LTL terminals are back to fully operational after Hurricane Idalia hit the region. Transit times will normalize after backed-up freight is worked through. 
    • The race is on for the Yellow terminals and non-rolling assets with a November 9th deadline, and Estes and ODFL are leading the charge, with Estes currently in the lead. The winning bidder is set to gain opportunities to improve terminal positioning and capabilities with greater dock space and intermodal access.

     

    ‌Truckload (TL) Updates:

    • FeightWaves Pricing Power Index increased to 35, remaining on the shipper side of influence, with a three-month outlook stability of 35.
    • Spot load posts are up 8.0%, spot truck posts are up 19.4%, and LTR (load-to-truck ratio) was down for van, flatbed and reefer. 
    • The intermodal sector is seeing a 4,000-unit weekly trailer decline due to Yellow’s closure, which was heavy in the East with rail movements.   
    • Dry van demand decreased 11.3% to a 2.87-1 LTR nationally, with the heaviest demand continuing to be stable in the Mississippi River Valley and Northeastern states at over 2.6-1 LTR and highest in VT at over 5.5+ to 1 LTR.
    • Dry van spot RPM (rate per mile) is up $0.03 from August at $2.11 RPM, down $0.34 y/y (year-over-year) nationally, with the Midwest holding the highest RPM of $2.33. 
    • Flatbed demand decreased 0.3% to a 6.83-1 LTR nationally, with demand highest at 18+ to 1 LTR in AL, AR, MS and OR.             
    • The national spot flatbed RPM is up $0.01 from August at $2.51 RPM, down $0.38 y/y, with the Midwest holding the highest RPM of $2.66.
    • Reefer demand decreased 15.5% to a 3.60-1 LTR, with the highest demand remaining stable in DE, ID and SD at over 12+ to 1 LTR.      
    • National reefer rates are up 2 cents to $2.52 RPM from August, down $0.33 y/y, and are highest in the Midwest at $2.92 RPM.
    • According to Sonar’s Outbound Tender Reject Index, over the past week, the following markets have the highest Tender Reject Index (tightest markets):            
      • Van: Green Bay, WI; Billings, MT; Erie, PA; Pittsburgh, PA, Elmira, NY and Cedar Rapids, IA.
